Tris or Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane or THAM is an organic compound with the formula (HOCH2)3CNH2. Tris is extensively used in biochemistry and molecular biology. In biochemistry, Tris is widely used as a component of buffer solutions, such as in TAE and TBE buffer, especially for solutions of nucleic acids. It contains a primary amine and thus undergoes the reactions associated with typical amines, e.g. condensations with aldehydes.

USAGE

Tris buffer is not only widely used as a solvent for nucleic acids and proteins, but also has many important uses. Tris are used for protein crystal growth under different pH conditions. the low ionic strength characteristics of [3]Tris buffer can be used for the formation of intermediate fibers of c. elegans (C.elegans) nuclear fibrillar) protein. [4]Tris is also a major component of protein electrophoresis buffer. furthermore, Tris is the intermediate for the preparation of surfactants, vulcanizing promoters and some drugs. Tris is also used as a titration standard.
