What is Tributyrin?

Tributyrin is a kind of white liquid which is nearly oily. It's odorless and has a slightly fatty aroma. The boiling point is 308 ° C and the melting point is -75 ° C. It is easily soluble in ethanol, chloroform and ether, and extremely insoluble in water. It occurs naturally in tallow.


This is mainly used for preparing cream, margarine and other spices, and also used as a solvent for spices.


The amount of tributyrin varies among different products, with 0.10 mg / kg in soft drinks, 0.04 mg / kg in cold drinks, 0.33 to 1000 mg / kg in candies, 290 mg / kg in baked foods, 0.36 mg / kg in puddings, 2.0 ~ 5.0 mg / kg in margarine.
Tributyrin can be prepared by heating glycerol and excess butyric acid to result an esterification reaction.
